Power Program

Background:

The PEI Energy Corporation has installed 8 large wind powered generators at North Cape. This "wind farm" is expected to supply almost 2% of PEI's annual electricity usage.

Wind is a renewable energy resource. Using the wind to generate electricity is an example of "green power", because it displaces the burning of fossil fuels, thus reducing emissions of greenhouse gases.

Green power usually costs more to produce than electricity from conventional sources such as oil and coal. One way to provide for this extra cost is for electricity users to pay a premium for green power.

The wind farm at North Cape was made possible because the governments of Canada and PEI have agreed to pay a green power premium for most of the electricity it generates. This electricity is designated as being used in government buildings in PEI.

Green Power Program

A portion (up to 20%) of the output from the wind farm is being made available for Maritime Electric customers. For individuals or businesses who would like to purchase green power, here is how it works.

  • Maritime Electric is already purchasing this electricity from the wind farm at a price that is equal to the cost that Maritime Electric would have incurred to purchase or generate this electricity from conventional sources.
  • When you sign up for the Green Power Program, the green power premium will appear as an additional line on your monthly bill from Maritime Electric.
  • Maritime Electric passes these green power premiums on to the PEI Energy Corporation which owns and operates the wind farm.

Why Purchase Green Power

Participating in the Green Power Program will mean paying more for some of the electricity that you use to support the development of a renewable energy resource right here in PEI. If the electricity available under this program becomes fully subscribed, then additional wind powered generators may be installed at North Cape.
