How Much Does It Cost?
How can I figure out how much electricity my appliances use?
Want to figure out how much electricity your appliances use so you better understand your electricity bill and can make decisions that save you energy and money? You can use our Energy Calculator or calculate it yourself with the following steps.
STEP 1: find the wattage (W) of your appliance. It may be stamped on the
appliance or highlighted in the manual. Can’t find it? Look instead for
the amps (A) and volts (V), you can use these to figure out wattage.
watts (W) = amps (A) x volts (V)
STEP 2: think about how often you use this appliance.
| kWh of electricity used = | W x hours of use |
| 1,000 (converts watts to kilowatts) |
For example, how much electricity do you use cooking a turkey in your oven for 4 hours?
| kWh of electricity used = | 3,200 W x 4 hours |
| 1,000 (converts watts to kilowatts) | |
| = 12.8 kWh | |
| = $1.92 (@ $0.15 / kWh) |
You can also use an Energy Meter. These are available at retail stores across Prince Edward Island or can be borrowed through the provincial library system.
