Heavy Equipment Technician

Maritime Electric is seeking applicants for the position of Heavy Equipment Technician.

Under the general supervision of the Fleet Manager, the Heavy Equipment Technician is responsible for performing and/or overseeing and assisting third-party contractors with major and minor repairs and preventative maintenance on various types of equipment. Committed to excellent customer service, the Heavy Equipment Technician is able to prioritize numerous competing requests while maintaining excellent relationships with both internal and external customers.

Requirements:

The successful candidate will be a Grade 12 graduate and hold a Red Seal (Journeyman) Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic/Service Technician, or Red Seal (Journeyman) Truck and Transport Mechanic. Preference will be given to those who also have the Canadian Utility Fleet Forum (CUFF) certification and experience and/or training on working with hydraulic and electro-hydraulic booms. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years working as a Red Seal Heavy Duty Mechanic or Truck and Transport Mechanic, preferably with electric utility experience. The candidate will be licensed to perform Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program inspections. The ability to hold and maintain a valid Class 3 Driver’s license with air brake endorsement is required. Experience with diagnosing and repairing mechanical, structural, electrical, and hydraulic systems for automotive, heavy duty, and utility vehicles and equipment. Experience working in a regulated environment, preferably within the electrical/energy industry would be an asset.

The successful candidate will have the following but not limited to skills and knowledge:

  • An advanced knowledge of Prince Edward Island Transportation Motor Vehicle Legislation.
  • Excellent working knowledge of hydraulic systems related to radial boom diggers and aerial devices.
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with team members and customers (both internal and external); this includes excellent communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills. 
  • Excellent customer service skills and the ability to anticipate and meet the expectations and requirements of internal and external customers such as line crews and vehicle operators.
  • Proficient computer skills - working knowledge of Internet Browsers, Microsoft Word, Outlook, excel including development and maintenance of basic spreadsheets and formulas, general computer knowledge, and aptitude for learning new applications.
  • Solid organizational, analytic skills with the ability to work independently or in a team environment.

The starting rate of pay for a Heavy Equipment Technician is $42.91 (representing 90% of the full rate of $47.68) per hour.
